This Too Shall Pass.: A building at my school.

This is so sad and so terrible.

My school.
Not just one you hear on the news, but here.

At 9-9:30 tonight, someone fell from the 11th floor of one of our school buildings. Suicide or homicide…it hasn’t been confirmed.

But it’s one of us.

Boston PD has confirmed that much, Suffolk PD has confirmed that much.

I stood with the security guard outside my building and talked with him for a while. I knew him, I pass him every day, but I’ve never spoken to him before.

“The thing that scares me…I see these kid’s faces every day. I know all of them, see all of them…Life goes by so fast. I can’t imagine not wanting to cherish every minute. I mean…a baby doesn’t go from being born to playing basketball, having a PhD. But it all goes by so quickly, just like that. People make decisions far too fast these days. You have to thank God for every second.”

I’m okay, but even just hearing all of this, it’s hard to breathe.

Eat clean, Train dirty.: A building at my school.

This is really depressing.

Second Tumblr.

I think I might start a second tumblr to use as a serious blog. Thoughts?

Facebook and cancer statuses

I know my tumblr is not a very serious blog, but I would like to address something that has really been bothering me lately, that being arm chair activism, specifically related to cancer. I often see people posting statuses like this “A cancer patient only has one wish, to get better. I know that 97% of you wont post this as your status, but my friends will be the 3% that do! Make this your status for an hour honor of someone who has died or is fighting cancer. ”

I have a huge problem with statuses of this nature, especially this one. Firstly, unless you have had cancer, you do not know what a cancer patient wishes for. Everyone is different, and people are affected differently by cancer, you don’t get to say what a cancer patient’s one wish is.

Secondly, maybe it makes you feel good to be one of the few people that posts that status, but you are not doing anything. All you are doing is posting a status that most people won’t notice. If you want to do something about cancer, help someone fight it,  or honor someone who has passed away from cancer, try actually doing something. What you are doing by posting statuses like that is called slactivism or armchair activism. You are literally just pointing out something that everybody knows. (cancer sucks, people fight it, people die of it, its sad, not many people will post that as your status). Seriously,  posting that statuses like that are about as effective as changing your profile picture to your favorite cartoon to help prevent child abuse. Yeah, okay so you really liked “Doug” when you were a kid, that’s nice, does that knowledge save a kid from getting abused or neglected? Probably not.

If you really want do do something donate somewhere or volunteer your time.  Here are a few amazing places that you can donate to. These places boost awareness, contribute to research or help people fight cancer.

American Cancer Society: http://www.cancer.org

Movember: http://us.movember.com

Imerman Angels: http://www.imermanangels.org

Livestrong: http://www.livestrong.org

I guess the main point of this little rant is that it is really irritating to see people post a status about something so serious simply to make themselves feel as if they have done something, when they haven’t. Sure, the message is meant to be positive, but in my opinion its pretty irritating and ineffective.
